Alat (Azerbaijan) to Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan) by ferry

Both the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) and the Merchant Marine Fleet of Turkmenistan (MMF) run ferries between Alat and Turkmenbashi.^{1 2} Their tickets are not interchangeable.

Neither company has a dependable passenger timetable. Before buying a ticket, find out which operator is likely to sail next, whether that sailing will accept passengers and your vehicle, and how that operator is currently selling tickets.

Journey at a glance

1. Confirm your Turkmen entry documents and permitted arrival date.

2. Check both operators to identify the next likely passenger sailing. Treat every estimate as provisional.

3. Travel from Baku to Alat port, about 70 km south of the city.³ The Alat port guide explains how to get there by taxi or public transport.

4. Buy or collect the correct operator's ticket and wait until called to board.

5. Complete Azerbaijan's exit formalities, cross the Caspian, and complete the required arrival procedures in Turkmenbashi.

Tickets and fares

Check both companies before buying: committing to one operator may mean waiting while the other sails first.

ASCO

ASCO does not offer online booking for Alat–Turkmenbashi; its online passenger system is limited to Alat–Kuryk–Alat.⁴ Contact ASCO's Turkmenbashi-route ticket office before traveling to Alat, confirm that the next ASCO sailing will accept passengers, and buy the ticket at the office. Merchant Marine Fleet of Turkmenistan

MMF operates the Ro-Pax ferries Berkarar and Bagtyyar.² Its online booking has not always been dependable; recent travelers bought tickets beside Alat's entrance once a sailing appeared likely.^{5 6 7} Reported 2025–2026 passenger fares ranged from USD 116 for basic accommodation to USD 180 for a deluxe cabin.^{6 7} See the MMF operator guide for booking, contacts, fares, and vessel tracking.

Confirm current fares, accommodation, payment methods, and vehicle charges before travelling to the port.

Documents and visa timing

Travelers have been asked for their passport, Azerbaijani entry or exit documents, and either a Turkmen visa or letter of invitation. Requirements vary, so confirm yours with your tour company, inviting party, embassy, or consulate. A Letter of Invitation issued through the State Migration Service normally forms the basis for a tourist visa.⁸

Fixed entry dates are difficult to combine with the uncertain sailing schedule. If the ferry arrives early, you may have to wait until your visa becomes valid; if it is late, you risk missing your permitted arrival window.⁵

Timetable and journey time

There is no fixed passenger timetable. Cargo operations, weather, berth availability, and border procedures can all cause delays. Vessel tracking may identify a likely sailing but does not confirm passenger acceptance or departure time.

Recent reports put the crossing itself at roughly 15–24 hours, but waiting before departure and after docking can make the complete journey much longer.^{6 9 7 10} Allow several days and avoid tight onward connections.

At Alat and boarding

On board

Accommodation ranges from basic seating or open sleeping areas to cabins, and facilities vary by ship.^{5 6 7 10} Bring extra food and water, toiletries, warm clothing, charging equipment, and an offline translation app. See the MMF operator guide or ASCO ships guide for vessel details.

Arrival in Turkmenbashi

You may remain aboard after docking before completing health, immigration, visa, baggage, and customs checks. Processing can take several hours.^{6 9 10}

Travelers in 2025 and 2026 reported a paid COVID or PCR-style test on arrival; several paid about USD 30.^{5 6 9 10} Confirm the latest requirements with your Turkmen tour company or local contact and carry suitable US-dollar cash. Arrange where your guide will meet you and make sure you can contact them if arrival is delayed.
